Why The Ice Cream Man Is Forever The Man

By Jeff DeCleff

As a kid being raised in suburbia, hearing the familiar and enchanting tune of the Mr Whippy van heading down my street was one of the high points of my week.

Hearing a faint sound in the distance, my tiny ears would prick up and I would become concentrated on determining the source.

Was it truly? Should it be? As the van entered into my turf and crawled down the hill I might shoot up with enthusiasm and race to seek out my mum and dad, closely followed by my younger sisters.

Jostling up and around at the heels of whichever guardian was unfortunate enough to be one to be found, we would cry "May we have fairy floss? ! Can we get choc tops pleeeeeeaaaaaaseee?!!"

More often than not, our polite requests were disappointingly turned down, yet when that spellbinding day when my parents handed over the $2 coin ultimately arrived, we were all smiling from ear to ear. What would we get this time? Who would go for the choc top? Who was choosing the waffle cone? Were there any new flavours to sample?

Now I'm all grown up, I can not say that I still have the same reaction each time I hear Mozart's 'Greensleeves ', but the same (albeit purposefully subdued) feeling of excitement takes over whenever I see an ice cream stand.

While the convention of the Mr Whippy truck is definitely fading, the presence of ice cream stands and shops are still felt in suburbs, communities and at markets and fetes all through Australia. And while lots of the usual favorites are still holding their own, more colourful and modern flavours are commonly taking the glory.

True to form, irrespective of which ice cream store or stand you visit, you are bound to find something to satisfy all the family. If it is bubblegum for the boys, strawberry for the girls, or double-choc cookie dough for the adolescents, the range of styles and flavours of ice cream available often requires a ten minute decision period in front of the display window.

I, personally, have turned into a boysenberry-in-a-waffle-cone type of girl. Sure, the yearnings for the old choc top still remain, but picking a sweetener (or mid-afternoon treat) that covers one of my daily intakes of fruit is nothing short of a blessing. With a variety of yummy gelatos and sorbets, there are even options for the diabetics and diet conscious.

While personal preferences and dietary needs may change, the sweet old school goodness of the ice cream stall remains largely the same. At your child's school fete, your community fair and even on your trip to Luna Park, you're definite to get a standard ice cream seller offering all of your adolescent faves. From choc tops to snow cones, and fairy floss to colored popcorn, you can show your children how it was done in the 'good old days'.

Ice cream is the treat for every age, and, after all , at least at 1 time in our lives, I screamed, you screamed, we all screamed for ice cream!
