Summer and Winter Wines

By Sam Wake

It is just a few weeks until the summer will be coming to an end and the school year begins once more, although you may not feel as if the weather has been particularly summery this year! Thankfully the British weather does not affect the sunnier continents that produce the wonderful wines that we enjoy. For producers such as Domaine de Bel Air the hillside gradients in which the vines grow make the most of every bit of sunshine to produce the highest quality grapes for their wines.

Despite the lack of sunshine this summer without even noticing, our wine choices will have changed during the summer months and will be set for another subtle change as we move towards winter and an even bigger change as we start to think about a fantastic wine to serve to our family, friends and loved ones on Christmas day.

I am sure I am not alone in having some favourite wines that I enjoy all year round whatever the season or occasion. Never the less we will all experience some subtle changes in our wine choices as the year progresses, just as our clothes gradually change from summer tops, through a light cardigan until we are wrapped up in our winter woollies against the winter chills. Consider a well chilled crisp rose, does that shout Christmas party or summer barbecue? Similarly, is mulled wine your drink of choice for a hot summer evening on the patio? Often these changes are in our subconscious but you can see that they do happened!

During winter our food and meals change from the light summer salads to richer hot meals and comfort foods and wines to suit these meals need to change too for them to be the perfect compliment. Innocent Bystander Wines are experts at matching food and wine to create the perfect balance, they produce great chardonnay and pinot rose to compliment summer meals and pinot noir or syrah for winter occasions.

The Sauvignon Blanc grape is a typical summer wine that is ideal for al fresco dining, Domaine de Bel Airs Pouilly Fume is a quality example of the grape and has intense fruit and flower flavours that epitomise summer.

Winter wines will alter in that we tend to lean towards rich reds to accompany hearty casseroles, rich soups and classic roast dinners most of which we rarely cook in the summer. Over and above the pairing with food we look for something to warm the cockles, so to speak, as we relax in our cosy warm homes, shutting out the cold winter nights.

Summer is the time for light wines and in contrast winter is the time for earthy full bodied wines such as Chateauneuf du Pape or a quality Cabernet Sauvignon or perhaps a Sangiovese from Innocent Bystander Wines. Sangiovese is infused with accents of aniseed and cherry and will be perfect with a simple bolognaise or for a special occasion an Osso Bucco.

There are countless wine producers from the well established to the new world and each has their own speciality. Innocent Bystander Wines are famed for their expertise in matching wine and food to perfection and family run vineyards are drawing in their expertise to establish award winning wines to enjoy throughout the year.
