Engineers work to make society run smoothly and have often found inspiration from the solutions that nature utilizes. Osmosis is the natural process of solvents, or molecules, moving through a passable membrane into a solution with a higher concentration to equalize the concentrations on both sides. Families purchase soup and juice concentrates every single day and this is possible by taking out as much excess liquid as possible so that it is a more inexpensive to produce a more potent product that consumers can modify at home by adding their own liquids.

This isn't just for industrial practices, however, since over 50 wineries across France have applied this technology to their wine making. Once the application was understand, vintners were able to produce precise flavor layers and notes through filtration.

The benefits of this process make it an integral part of a variety of industries. It allows for a more environmentally friendly amount of energy consumption and makes shipping costs for a variety of products more inexpensive.
