Storing Survival Food For Emergencies And Disasters Makes Good Sense

By Gretchen Robertvine

If you have survival food for emergencies and disasters you will be ready for any event that might shut down local food service. You might not think such an event could happen, but it is a good idea to be ready. As they say, an ounce of protection is worth a pound of cure.

There are a lot of people who simply do not believe that such a problem could occur. But the fact is, disasters such as earthquake, or flood, or other problem could keep grocery stores and restaurants closed for a period of time.

But there have been many disasters over the years that have shut down all the food resources for a period of time so it is best to plan for the worst and hope for the best. You can start by finding a place in your home to store food that you would use in an emergency such as an area in your basement. The basement is a good place to store food because it is usually the coolest place in your home.

Also it is a place that does not have direct sunlight in most cases. If you have shelves to store food in the basement then great, if not build shelves yourself or have someone with building skills put them in for you. Some people have the right idea by storing up food for an emergency, but they go about the process wrong.

Do not make the common mistake that people make. Many have good intentions, but they go about the storage situation wrong. They will buy a month supply of food, let it go bad after about a year and then throw it out and replace it. This is a waste of money and food.

Every month, or however long you need to take the food from storage before it goes bad, use the food you have in storage and replace what you take. It is a good idea to buy a lot of your food in bulk. There are many membership stores that sell food in large quantity containers. The containers are easily stored in your food storage area and the containers are made to keep out sunlight, moisture, and household pests.

The containers are good for keeping out moisture, sunlight, and household pests. Once the containers are empty, you can use them to store other types of food. Do not use containers that held chemicals at one time to store your food however.

Consider having a food survival kit in your car. You might have to leave your home because of an evacuation order. You will not have time in many cases to take food from your storage and place it in your car. Plus, you do not want your food in your car because it will spoil quickly.

There are many easy to prepare meals that are sold at camping stores. These instant meals are used by back packers when they are in the woods and will stay in your trunk for a period of time. Remember to use those meals as well before the expire. With a little preparation now, you will be ready for a disaster in your area.
