Good Food And Vibe At Izakaya Sherman Oaks

By Esperanza Witt

If you are into the trendy concept of izakaya Sherman Oaks now has one at the old location of Yoshi's Shabu Shabu on Ventura Boulevard. Although there might be many who will miss the old restaurant, the new one still has the same owners and should have even more to offer.

The concept comes from Japanese sake shops which also serve small food dishes so it has a heavier focus on the drinks menu than normal sushi restaurants would. The menu therefore has a wide selection of sake as well as wines which compliment sushi such as Riesling and Syrah. There are also many beers and cocktails to choose from and happy hour is from 3pm to 6pm and again between 11pm and 12.

Colloquially they are known as Akachochin, meaning red lantern, because of the lanterns which normally hang outside the shops to identify them. In the traditional shops they first offer an oshibori or wet towel to clean your hands. This would be followed by a small appetizer, which is always added to the bill as a sort of cover charge.

Food in these establishments is always served as small dishes that can be sampled and shared and the latest one to open in the valley is no exception. The decor is more up-market and refined than you would find in Asia and there are also Korean dishes on the menu. It is a bit more like a sports bar with a number of big screens but it is not really intended to be a quite sit down restaurant.

The menu has a selection of Sushi as you might expect and even kobe steak but cooked Japanese dishes such as robata and skewered yakatori are more prevalent. Very popular Korean dishes are the meat or seafood bibim bap topped with and egg or pork kimchee soup.

The lunchtime special is complemented with a hot bowl of rice, miso soup, and salad. For everything you expect and more from izakaya Sherman Oaks is the place to find it.
